Ideally, we wanted to have a not perfect but a comfortable house to live. But in reality, despite the fact that we are doing what we can to improve our house there still remain problem that disturbs our peace of mine. One example of this is flooding basements. And sump pump is the best way to help you with that problem! Technically, sump pump collects flood water and then pumps it away or drain it safely underground.
Sump pump can do the hard job for you and it does the job that most of us can really afford. So, without any further ado, here are the easy steps for installing sump pumps in your basements.
How to Install a Sump Pump: 7 Steps
1:Locate the Lowest Point of your Basement
Since the problem occurs on your basements. The first thing you should do is to locate the lowest point of your basement where you usually observe water accumulation. After locating the lowest part, dig a wide and deep hole at least 10 inches wider than the sump. If your basement flooring is concrete, use sledge or jackhammer to dig a hole. Make sure to keep distant at least 10 inches off the wall to avoid the base footing. Do not stop digging until the cavity can fit the pump basin.
2:Seat The Liner in The Hole
After digging a hole that fits the sump and has a depth of at least 12 foot. Place the sump into the hole and place gravel around the boundary gaps of sump liner, you can use any size of gravel as long as it is fit on the space between the sump and the side of the hole. Make sure to have at least 1 inch left from the bottom gravel area to the floor and then fill that part with concrete. Smooth the surface and let it dry for at least 24 hours.
3:Install the Pump
Generally, sump pumps price ranges from $$ to $$$, many manufacturer provides good quality units. As directed by the manufacturer, first, set the pump into the basin. Keep in mind that the diameter of your pump is 1 ½ inches. Start by threading 1 ½ inches PVC male adapter into the port and tighten it using pliers until you feel the snug. For additional support, add gravel to the bottom of the sump pit or set the sump to a concrete paver to keep it reach the bottom of the pit. Make sure that check valves are connected using hose clamps, check valves need to be replace regularly so it is easy for you to remove this for replacement.

4:Attach the Adapters
Place the male adapter to the PVC discharge pipe using PVC or solvent then place into the female adapter on the pump. Use a ¼ inch drill to make a hole into the discharge pipe six inches above the pump. This allows water to flow back into the pump when it is turned off to keep it primed.
5:Install Check Valve
When the pump is in place, with the use of wire tires, attach the pumps’ electrical cord to discharge then put the check valve on the open end of the discharge pipe. After this, place the pump into the sump and prepare to run water out of the basement. Please take note to use a check vale that is made for vertical operation.
The valve’s purpose is to keep the pump from burning out. Check valve propelled up the riser and then fall back into the pit when the pump is off this acts as preventing agent that controls the function of the pump. Constant on and off could quickly harm your pump.
Usually the valve come with hose clamps and rubber couplings. Make sure to position the valve with arrow pointing up which indicates the flow direction. Then using a nut driver or a screwdriver, tighten the lower coupling riser.
6:Complete the Discharge Pipe
You can now add the second riser section right above the valve that extends into the space between the basement ceiling joists. The position of a horizontal run that exits the house is determined by the length of this piece. So cut the oversize piece for now. Then attach the second riser to the coupling of the check valve with a hose clamp.
Piping systems must be connected to deliver the water outdoors, because groundwater cannot be purged into the household plumbing system it should be independently set outside to disperse water out from the basement.
Some grade is not suitably sloped away and the waste water cannot run easily. For this problem, you need to install a dry well outside that acts as discharge pipe.
7:Running the Pump
Fill the basin with water to test if the pump is functioning. Make sure that the pump is plugged into a GFCI protected receptacles. The water must reach nearly to the top. When the water reaches the point that lifts the float, the pump will turn on automatically and turns off when the water level drops, and the water should pump out. You can adjust the float level of the pump as directed by the manufacturer.
Do not forget to cover the hole surrounding of the pump. Mixed up cement and spread it around to conceal all except the sump pump lid. Inspect if there are connection leaks and the lid is placed over the basin.
